A remarkable sighting of beautiful white giraffes is going around on the internet and we’re sharing the photos and video, but first we would like to recognize our directory member, Caralyn Edwards of Mystic Reflections who creates beautifully detailed fantasy art sculptures from polymer clay. We’ll have more info on her work for you toward the end of this post, but first lets get on with our topic concerning these white giraffes.
Rare white giraffes (two – a mother and baby) were spotted and filmed in Kenya by Hirola Conservation Program (HCP) rangers. They are not albino. They have a condition known as leucism, which occurs from reduced levels of pigments in skin cells. The mother is seen pacing, a signal to her young to hide for protection. Reports from villagers brought awareness to the rangers who went out to see for themselves. Elder villagers stated these special animals are not common in the area.
